A Tri-Alpha chapter promotes academic excellence and provides opportunities for ​growth, leadership development, and community service for first-generation college ​students.


Our Mission

TRI-ALPHA

Tri-Alpha First-Generation Honor Society recognizes the ​academic achievements of First-Generation College ​Students.


UMKC students, faculty, staff, and alumni are encouraged ​to apply to join Tri-Alpha to support and advocate for

First-Generation College Students.


The lifetime membership is achieved through the one-​time national induction fee of $15 for students and $25 ​per faculty/staff/alumni inductee.

  • An outward recognition of personal accomplishment and an incentive for continued high scholarship
  • Opportunities to meet other first-gen students from all academic disciplines
  • Be a part of a group that promotes academic excellence and creates a supportive environment for First-Generation ​College Students
  • Identifies you to employers, professionals, and graduate schools as a person of superior academic ability and ​commitment
  • Mentoring opportunities with other First-Generation College Students

ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA

First-Generation Honor Society

Qualifications:

Has achieved an ​overall ​undergraduate ​GPA of at least ​a 3.2 on a 4.0 ​scale

Has earned at least ​30 credit hours ​towards a ​baccalaureate ​degree

Meet UMKC’s ​definition of First ​Generation College ​Student. (Neither of ​the student's parents ​nor legal guardians ​has completed a ​bachelor's degree in ​the United States)

Faculty and staff qualify ​for induction by meeting ​the definition of a First ​Generation College ​Student listed above at ​the time they completed ​their bachelor's degree. ​Faculty and staff must ​be willing to serve as ​mentors for first-gen ​students.

Graduate students who ​are first-gen students can ​be admitted if they have ​completed the equivalent ​of at least one term of ​study (9 or more credits) ​and have a GPA in their ​graduate program of at ​least 3.5
